We are looking to appoint an experienced Intervention Specialist to join our friendly and supportive team.
Odyssey House School is an exciting new special school setting, aiming to provide the highest quality education to students with special educational needs, primarily high-functioning autism. All students will be able to follow a differentiated National Curriculum, with the aim of achieving a range of recognised qualifications at Key Stage 4 and 5 including Entry Level, Functional Skills and GCSEs and other Level 2 qualifications.
Staff and students will benefit from small class sizes, dedicated library, reading booths, student focus area, sensory room, staff well-being lounge and work area. Staff will be able to deliver the curriculum through a range of specialist classrooms including ICT suite, Music studio, Art classroom, Science Lab, Assembly/PE/Dining Hall and a Food Technology classroom.
Duties and responsibilities
Strategic direction and development:
- Support the vision, ethos and policies of the school which secure effective teaching, successful learning and promote high levels of achievement and self-esteem for all pupils irrespective of background, ethnicity, gender or disability;
- Take an active part in the creation and implementation of the School Strategic Development Plan which identifies priorities and targets for ensuring pupils achieve high standards and make progress, increasing teachers’ effectiveness and securing school improvement and to take responsibility for appropriately delegated aspects of it;
- Support the evaluation of the effectiveness of the school’s policies and developments and analyse their impact on pupils who have special educational needs;
- Ensure that parents are well informed about the curriculum, targets, individual pupils’ progress and achievement;
- Manage and support Learning Mentors and staff involved in pastoral care, providing guidance and leadership;
- Ensure appraisal targets for support staff are met through a flexible and adaptable approach;
- Develop and maintain good relationships with parents, outside agencies and the local community;
- Track and monitor progress of pupils;
- Maintain records for individual pupils.
Student support
- Identify and teach study skills that will develop pupils’ ability to work independently;
- Coordinate and support the development of suitable intervention programmes for pupils;
- Liaise with other schools to ensure continuity of support and learning when transitioning pupils;
- Liaise with other professionals, including SALT and music therapy teams, to ensure comprehensive support for pupils.
- Support whole school reading initiatives and manage initial assessments and interventions;
- Provide feedback on the progress of interventions and liaise with other professionals and parents;
- Help manage student behaviour and support teaching staff with intervention strategies;
- To provide support to staff in regards to the nature of appropriate differentiation for students;
- Deliver and assist with one-to-one targeted interventions;
- To work directly with small groups of students or 1:1 as appropriate.
Recording and assessment
- To maintain consistent records, which indicate the work carried out and the progress made by pupils and to provide regular feedback;
- To participate in the evaluation of support intervention programmes;
- Work with the SENCo to prepare review documentation and when required chair review meetings.
- Set targets for raising achievement among pupils;
- Collect and interpret specialist assessment data;
- Update the Headteacher on the effectiveness of provision for pupils;
- Develop understanding of learning needs and the importance of raising achievement among pupils;
- Use PAGS and Renaissance software to effectively track progress and plan for each child.
- Attend consultation with parents to keep them informed of their child’s progress.
Standards and quality assurance
- Support the aims and ethos of the School;
- Set a good example in terms of dress, punctuality and attendance;
- Attend and participate in open evenings and pupil performances;
- Uphold the school’s behaviour code;
- Participate in staff training;
- Attend team and staff meetings;
- Develop links with outside agencies.
Maintenance of Professional Standards:
- Keep yourself fully appraised and aware of educational and other appropriate developments, whether national or local, and assess their impact on the school and the team for which you are responsible;
- Ensure the highest standards of professional conduct and confidentiality at all times, and in particular when with other staff of the school;
- Ensure the development and maintenance of a team culture that enables all members of the Leadership Team to be effective in their respective roles;
- Ensure the development and maintenance of a collaborative culture which demonstrates loyalty and integrity towards school leaders.
To fulfil any other responsibilities as reasonably requested by the Headteacher and Executive Team.
